The Mediterranean coastal regions of Europe, North Africa, Asia Minor, and the Middle East are mapped in great detail and with accuracy in this sixteenth-century nautical chart made by a mapmaker from Venice, Italy.

Nautical charts based upon compass readings began to be created in the thirteenth century. They could not provide reliable open ocean sailing instructions but instead offered accurate depictions of smaller bodies of water, like the Mediterranean, Black, and Red Seas. These charts included lists of ports, coastal landmarks, and distances. Eventually, similar charts were drawn up for parts of the Atlantic and Pacific and the newly discovered seas of Africa, the Americas, and South Asia.
